Brief History of St. Theresita's Academy

Colegio de Sta. Teresita, presently called St. Theresita's Academy, had its humble beginnings on June 13, 1933, in a rented house with the pioneer SSJ sisters: Mother Amancia Bautista Milagros Sarmiento, Anunciation Marco and Olivio Moreno. Its initial apostolic scope was to provide Catholic education to Kindergarten and primary pupils. The school was named after the little saint for such was the original name of the parochial school in the city.

The feast of the Immaculate Concepcion of 1949 marked the laying of the cornerstone of the new school building in its present location at Rizal St., Silay City. When the construction was completed, the transfer commenced on October 3, 1950 to the new school building which came in full operation from preschool to secondary course.

With the aid of the Divine Providence, the cooperation and generosity of the Silaynons and other Negrenses from neighboring towns as well as the commitment to service of the first Siervas de San Jose in Silay, the school population increased with a quality of education by word and facilities improved through the years.

In response to the needs of the present, as we keep attuned to the promptings of the Holy Spirit and reading the signs of the times, the Siervas de San Jose continue to keep the Nazareth Spirit vibrant and alive even today in its evangelizing mission.

The SSJ philosophy of education is expressed in four elements which form the nuclei of its educational identity. Such elements are sanctified work, sharing, Nazareth as model and commitment to the poor working world.
